We pass Eagle's Nest and descend into Red River.

From afar the town looks ridiculously narrow, squeezed between the narrow walls of the canyon.

The main street is lined with ticky-tacky stores geared toward stealing one’s hard-earned money, and this is evident even in the grocery store where the cost of a pack of hot dog buns stuns me. Even the snacks are outrageous. I decide I don’t need anything that bad. It’s a relief to leave, and mentally I shake off its dust from my boots.

If I had to choose between Red River and the howling wastes of Sharon Springs, Kansas, it would be no contest. Sharon Springs might be depressingly desolate but at least it’s authentic.

South China Sea UFO Encounters

About USS Cimarron (AO-22) during her last WestPac Cruise (1967) ...

On a clam Sunday afternoon in transit to Yankee Station from Subic Bay PI, our starboard lookout suddenly reported a dark surface contact ten degrees off the bow. We'd had NO prior South China Sea surface radar contacts!

By the time the OOD-UW reacted to this report, we observed two contacts that merged into one as we watched. Our bridge wing gyro-compass repeater showed no bearing change which meant CIM was on a "collision course" with this UFO (Unidentified Floating Object) . . .

We were already 'in extemis' as CIM's bow plowed into the UFO's last known position. So, we scanned for debis and advised our fantail man overboard watch to do the same.

While our bridge watch team tried to assess these unexpected developments, our duty BMOW (Bosuns Mate on Watch) shouted WHALE HO off the starborad beam!

Then, we all observed a huge whale breach about 40 feet vertically into the air . . . while giving CIM the "angry eye" for disturbing its Sunday siesta.

Our summary: No harm / No foul / No collsion report!

The following accident report damage mirrors the USS HORNET (CVS-12)
collision with USS CIMARRON (AO-22) near Port of San Diego (Sep-1968)

USS RANGER (CV-61) collides with USS WICHITA during refueling.
RANGER's flight deck elevator is damaged, but no injuries are reported.

USS WICHITA (AOR-1) damages its refueling capability.
All port fueling stations are put out of commission,
including the loss of all fuel hoses. Part of WICHITA's
aft superstructure is crushed on the starboard side.
